For her first Friday Fiction of 2016, Jade takes a look at Robert Ludlum’s spy thriller…

The Bourne Identity
Robert Ludlum

A change of gear for 2016 with a fast-paced, furiously energetic tale of subterfuge & secrets that will keep you hooked all the way until the very end.

Spy thriller ‘The Bourne Identity’ may be better known to most of you as a film however, Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne started life in a book. Bourne is a man with a mysterious past, so much so that he himself is unaware of what caused him to wash ashore… setting him on a path to discover who he is and why there are people chasing him.

The concept of the book came about when author Robert Ludlam suffered from a bout of temporary amnesia himself and became interested in the illness. His passion for real crime stories meant that he could combine the two and create something unique and interesting for his readers.

The book is action packed and Ludlum’s attention to detail ties the story together extremely well. There are plenty of surprising twists and enough riveting storylines to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the book.

The characters are interesting, particularly the two leads, and are able to hold up a complicated story and fit seamlessly into the action.

Plot-wise, the book is quite different from the film, whilst similar in one main respect – a man with amnesia finds he has a more complex and dangerous life than he could ever have imagined. If you enjoyed the film then you will definitely enjoy the book which is just as gripping and surprising.

Publisher’s blurb:

“He was dragged from the sea, his body riddled with bullets. There are a few clues: a frame of microfilm surgically implanted beneath the skin of his hip; evidence that plastic surgery has altered his face; strange things he says in his delirium, which could be code words. And a number on the film negative that leads to a bank account in Zurich, four million dollars and a name for the amnesiac: Jason Bourne.

Now he is running for his life. A man with an unknown past and an uncertain future, the target of assassins and at the heart of a deadly puzzle. He’s fighting for survival and no one can help him – except the one woman who once wanted to escape him…”
